What Degree Do You Need to Become an Acupuncturist?

To legally practice acupuncture in the U.S., you must complete an accredited graduate-level education program, pass professional competency exams, and obtain licensure.

A master’s degree is usually the minimum requirement for licensure, though acupuncture doctorate degrees have become increasingly popular.

Doctoral-level study of acupuncture provides advanced diagnostic training and allows for a deeper understanding of traditional Chinese medicine. 

Prerequisites

Acupuncture degrees at Bastyr require either a completed undergraduate degree or a minimum of 135 quarter credit hours from an accredited college before applying. Your bachelor’s degree can be in any field, though a background in natural sciences or anatomy is helpful.

Training Consistency and Quality

Acupuncture students at Bastyr complete the majority of their clinical training at Bastyr Center for Natural Health, the largest natural health clinic in the Pacific Northwest. Students receive clinical training in acupuncture and Chinese herbs as well as other modalities relevant to their scope of practice. 

Students also have the opportunity to provide care at one of our community care clinics for patients that might not otherwise have access to acupuncture and TCM.
