Health Education Informed by Science & Nature: the Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine at Bastyr University

The School of Naturopathic Medicine at Bastyr University develops leaders in the evolving field of natural medicine by emphasizing the role of nature as the most effective healer and providing education in current scientific research on health and human systems.

Since its inception in 1978, Bastyr University has been a pioneer in science-based natural medicine. With little more than ambition and a dream, Bastyr’s founders created a vision for an accredited natural health school that is now recognized as the leading health arts and sciences university in the world.

Bastyr’s accredited naturopathic doctor (ND) program is internationally renowned for its rigorous curriculum, comprehensive clinical training and groundbreaking research. Our graduates consistently earn top scores on the Naturopathic Licensing Examinations (NPLEX) and go on to become transformative healers and leaders in natural medicine. In fact, graduates from Bastyr’s ND program get accepted to residency programs in over 11 states as well as Canada. More than any other ND school in North America.

The Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine program is accredited by the Council on Naturopathic Medical Education (CNME), a specialized accrediting board recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. A copy of the CNME Handbook of Accreditation for Naturopathic Medical Colleges and Programs (2022 edition) is on reserve in the Bastyr University Library.

Bastyr University has two campuses — the main campus in Kenmore, Washington, and a second campus in San Diego, California. The University also has two teaching clinics — Bastyr Center for Natural Health located in Seattle, Washington, and the Bastyr University Clinic, which shares the location with the San Diego campus.

Who should pursue an ND?

Here are some common traits and interests of individuals who thrive as naturopathic practitioners:

A passion for natural medicine

The most successful students in the ND program at Bastyr are those who are interested in a healthcare career that goes beyond addressing patient symptoms to treat the root cause of illness and optimize health and wellness.

Cultural sensitivity

As a medical caregiver, you may treat patients from every race, ethnicity, culture and socioeconomic background. An understanding and appreciation of people whose backgrounds and belief systems differ from yours will help you provide the best care possible.

Strong teamwork and leadership skills

The relationship between doctor and patient requires NDs to play the role of collaborator and leader. The ability to work well with others as equals and the confidence to assume a leadership role will help you succeed as an ND student and practitioner.

Courses and Curriculum
Bastyr University offers an integrated, hybrid curriculum that focuses on real-world experiences. Students are trained to think like doctors from the start through a combination of disciplines like anatomy and physiology with case study classes and clinical experience.

Faculty work with students to solidify the connections between concepts and disciplines within the practice of medicine and how they work together to support the body.

Admissions Requirements

In addition to the completion of a bachelor’s degree or higher from a regionally accredited college/university or its foreign equivalent, students must also complete a series of prerequisite coursework as preparation for the study of naturopathic medicine.

Though not required for admission, faculty recommend students complete biochemistry, anatomy and physiology, and microbiology coursework in addition to the prerequisite requirements.
